016/C-3 Digital Elements and Devices Laboratory

Supervisors and location

Laboratory Supervisor: Dr. Jarosław Sugier, Jaroslaw.Sugier@pwr.edu.pl.

Location: room 016 in building C-3 on the WUST Campus

Scope of activities

The core activity of the laboratory is research in the design, implementation, and testing of digital devices with a particular focus on the use of CPLD and FPGA programmable logic circuits.

The laboratory mainly hosts teaching activities with topics including:

  • design, simulation, and hardware testing of digital circuits,
  • use of programmable circuits in the implementation of application-specific digital devices,
  • applications of embedded and single-chip systems,
  • seminars and projects.

Offer for Industry

The laboratory has the tools and capabilities to perform research and programming work in the field of fully automatic or manually optimized implementation of digital systems described in hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog) or graphical (schematic) form. The hardware platforms used, thanks to the use of programmable CPLDs and FPGAs, allow work on a wide variety of topics related to the operation of modern digital systems. The range of possible applications includes, among others:

  • pipelined systems for parallel processing of high-throughput data streams,
  • customized visualization modules using HDMI / DVI / VGA interfaces,
  • hardware implementations of algorithms, e.g. cryptographic or image processing,
  • dedicated drivers for transmission protocols such as USB, I2C, or SPI,
  • operation of analog inputs and outputs in a digital system (A/D and D/A converters),
  • implementations of static and dynamic RAM and non-volatile Flash memory interfaces, including support for SD and other cards,
  • different organizations of processor units of the RISC, SIMD, or CISC type,
  • support for network communication (Ethernet, MII interface).
